So I broke out my phone during the last few bike rides up at Doumont. Here are a few of the wrecks that I have found. Unfortunately, most have been severely vandalised.
First up is this fabulous old van. I am guessing circa 1930's and have no idea of the manufacturer. Hopefully someone can provide some insight. The chassis is pretty much gone and the body is slowly dissolving back into the earth. This was one of my favourites though. I particularly like the spare wheel carrier on the outside of the van just abaft the right hand door. It's just crying out to be dragged into someone's garage and hot rodded.

Next up is what I think was a Chevrolet. Please correct me if I am wrong. It has been heavily vandalised.

Anyone want a Camaro? How someone managed to get this along a single track trail is beyond me. Other bits of the car were scattered through the bush. The hood was there, but had around fifty bullet holes through it. The only useable parts were the front slam panel and potentially the front seat frames, which were lying nearby.
I think that the truck front was a GMC. The rest was missing.

ABAFT = towards the stern (or rear in a car) , would that be close Mark?

I saved the best until last. I think my friend I was riding with thought I was properly nuts when I saw this one hiding in a tree - especially when I identified the manufacturer, model, colour (Dove Blue) and the fact that it was built between 1958 and 1960.
Anyone want a VW Split truck?
Needs a bit of work, but it could be brought back!
Given the cost of buses these days this thing must be worth at least $12k?
Okay, maybe $8k.
A few of those funky green panels, a bit of a polish and you could have a patina ride?
Now if some awesome person on Airspeed could just sell me a vin plate and some papers....
Perhaps it could be used as a museum piece for Reagh.
I couldn't locate the rest of the bus, nor could I tell if it was a single or double cab. All that remained was the rear two - three feet. No engine, lights, trans, perfect pressed bumper... It's a shame there wasn't more of it as it's only a couple of hundred feet from the asphalt down a logging road!
I also spotted a fifties or early sixties beetle door lying near the Chev' car. It was riddled with bullet holes and the metal below the window was completely covered in a couple of inches of moss.

Yes Tony, abaft - towards the rear, or stern. Thanks for the clarification. When you work around boats and ships all your life the terms tend to become part of your daily language!

Excellent pictures, Mark. I like identifying crusty wrecks like this... The first one, an old panel truck, has me stumped. It is from the '30's but the styling of the main body is quite generic. Too bad the front is missing... The car that you thought might be a Chevrolet, is in fact something much more interesting...
Definitely not a Chev, it is in fact either a Dodge or Plymouth, very likely from 1958. It is a plain model with no trim, likely something like this...
But this is a direct relation to something much more exciting...
Yes we are talking about one of my all-time favourite movies.... "Christine" was said to be a 1958 Plymouth Fury, although in the movies they used the more common Belvedere model like the Christine replica chosen above. Talk about an evil looking car...
And my favourite scene in the movie... A shame they destroyed many cars to make the movie in those pre-computer days...
The front clip is not a Camaro, but something desirable as well....
Looks like a 1970 Chevelle to me. Still in original paint too.
The next picture of the truck front end and grill is actually about a 1950 Ford truck. Same as this...
Cool that you found an actual VW out there...

And here is your single cab. Now go get a shovel....

Figured out the panel truck...
A 1935-ish Ford. The sidemount spare was not standard on all models...
From the front. If you do a google image search on this model, it is surprising how many have survived out there...

well, I guess that my id of the North American tin was way off!
That truck is cool! If anyone knows of anyone who would be interested in it, it is quite close to the road, so would be relatively easy to recover. It is very stripped out, although I don't suppose that would bother many of the custom guys.
Unfortunately the Split single cab is dead. The left (port side for Tony!) is there, but mangled, as are both rear corners and the rear end of the deck. what little is there appears to have been run over by a bulldozer and left to rot - which it has done remarkably well. No shovels required, it can be lifted quite easily out of the loose earth it is sat in. If it was any good, it would be sat in my driveway by now!

I found a few more today. A little more modern than the last batch. These are on the side of a trail named Hades. Russ will probably correct me on this, but I think that this first one looks a bit like a Pontiac. I was thinking Pontiac GTO, but as you have already seen, if it's not European, I don't know! I'm fairly certain that this one was a Datsun. Not quite a classic, but certainly getting on in years and probably easier to find dumped in the bush than on the roads these days. Attachments:

I have no idea what this last one was. It was a car (ie, not a truck), but the roof was mangled and folded back. My friend was thinking Mustang, but it appeared to be a four door. Rear disc brakes. It still had part of an engine.
