More posts from myself and Volktales that were posted on the other site: I finally got my new(used)Eurovan wheels bored out(so they go on the Iltis' hub) and painted(thanks again to Grant out at Island Truck). Then Cedar Tire mounted up the Goodyear tires Laurie bought me for Christmas. and "tada!" a safer ride. Haven't had it on the dirt yet, but it drives nicer on the pavement and now I can stop on wet pavement as well as my drum brakes will allow Just thought I should post what's been up with the Iltis. Well, not much other than it is up, on jackstands that is! Last year driving about there was the odd click-clacking coming from what seemed like the rear and sometimes the front , so it left me a bit perplexed. It ran fine otherwise(perhaps a touch warm, I will have to address that too) so I figured it was the CVs. Being that the vehicle has 4 axles and 8 CVs it wasn't too narrowed down! I procrastinated for almost the whole winter and I am just now getting to the job. The first task was to remove an axle and see what I was up against. After removing an axle and cleaning up the CVs to see what they looked like, VolkTales pronounced 2 of 4 from 2 axles dead. The inners were the culprits and they looked suspiciously like Bay and Vanagon CVs. However it turns out that even with the help of the yahoo group on the Iltis and the DND Manual, I could not come up with a single cross over number. Crap! So even though I wasn't into spending the money on completely rebuilt axles(DND surplus) complete with 2 CVs per and boots and greased up, I did anyway. For just the bare CV it was 2/3rds the cost of the complete axle so it really wasn't too far a leap. Just as an aside, the clacking was probably just from my right rear axle being loose at the inner joint, but I guess this whole ordeal will set my mind at ease and I will be able to drive the truck some more. The new axles ready to go Here is a shot of the hub disconnected and swung out of the way with the axle removed and sitting below. The axle in Now the brake lines. Should have been 4 formed brake lines for the front and the rear and it turned out to be 2 formed(poorly!) and two straight. :? I am new at bending lines and need a decent set of pliers! But I managed... My go at the long front passenger's side: Installed Here is the front left, not very close to the old one. Straight from the Military rebuilders! Took a bit, but got it closer So now it is all back together and then this happened: Broken bleeder bolt. Crap. Gotta figure out what to do tomorrow. Probably going to be ordering another part(brake cylinder) from Edmonton! The rest are freed up. Having fun on the Heart Loop behind Ladysmith. It is hard to see, but this was a VERY narrow and STEEP trail! Didn't actually go thru the narrowest section because it didn't go to where we needed and we could have got caught at the bottom of a sandy slope. As it was, making it back up the steep rocky trail was enough on the kidneys, Today was time for another fun trip in the Iltis. And to think that Don was seriously considering selling this.... Don, Victor, our student Bruno from Brazil, and myself at a viewpoint behind Ladysmith. This time we entered the backwoods via the road behind Ron's infamous stash of VW's south of Ladysmith. Here is a view of Stocking lake, which is part of the Ladysmith/Saltair water system. Because of this we had to take a short walk in to see the lake as motorized vehicles are banned here. Judging by the quad and dirtbike tracks everywhere, these rules don't apply to them... This view is from the Stocking Lake Loop trail. It was quite rough and steep but there were no signs saying you couldn't drive on it. The two older ladies sitting by the trail in the middle of nowhere gave us dirty looks however when we passed them... There was even a park bench at the viewpoint. We didn't go further as the trail deteriorated significantly after this point. Two dirt bikers made it from the other direction and it was steep for them too. And there she sits, waiting to take us back. Glad Don is going to keep it now.

Saw one of these (an Iltis decked out in military paint) parked behind a large tree in 1300 block Hampshire road in Oak Bay today. Couldn't see all of it but it looked complete. Stan

There was a guy in Royston that had one for years. His had been converted to a 1.9TD. It was for sale for a while, not sure what happened to it.

That was Reza. I am pretty sure he sold it. Conversion was a cool idea, but it did not match well to the gearing and hwy driving was worse than stock FWICR. There is one in my neighborhood sand colored canvas top they drive around with surf boards on the top they live on Miracle Beach Drive but work in Alberta. That is one helluva commute! I have a thing for sand colour on the Iltis.

Was there a factory 1.6TD? Not to my knowledge, but I have been wrong before. I am pretty sure Reza did his particular conversion himself. If you'd like, I have some spare time to take that iltis or for a run. Ah yes, but do you have some spare money for a set of batteries and time to fix its niggling problems? LOL! One day it will get back on the off-road as it were
