A-Ha, an elusive tailgater Can't imagine how long a trip it'd be from Altaland. Pretty hard core; hope they are having fun in the sun and surf

I finally got some time and energy to devote to my long-suffering Iltis. The first order of business was to sort out my battery issues. The Iltis, being a military animal is 24 volt which is achieved by two 12V batteries in series. They are located underneath the rear seats. Even before I put the Iltis into storage(in my garage) I knew the batteries weren't doing very well. Other issues with them were that they had different post configurations, were different sizes and had different hold-downs, the latter not doing a very good job at keeping them in place at all. So, after measuring up the batteries and setting what post configuration I needed, the hunt was on. Using a tip from a friend who was eager to see the Iltis on the road, I ended up finding a couple of batteries at Costco that fit the bill. I was going to modify the crappy hold-downs by welding on tabs, but then had second thoughts because they would still look like crap. So I went to the Metal Supermarket in Nanaimo and bought some steel I figured I could bend with a brake and or in a vise. Turns out it was a combination of those(thanks to Joe Fort for the use of his brake for the first bend). I wanted a completely rolled-over edge that contacted the battery, so it meant some fussy measuring to double over the metal for some of its length. And here is what they ended up looking like: Yes, that is galvanized metal, not my choice really, but that is what the guy brought to the window. I realize the paint won't stick to it very long, but I just needed to get it done... They don't look too bad in place. At least they look similar, and the batteries don't budge! I had Discount battery Warehouse(beside Bakers in Nanaimo) make up a inter-battery cable because the old one was crap. Good thing I went with my gut and made it e few inches longer because it is juuuust right Plus I had to re-solder and subsequently crimp on another connector on the original wiring coming from the left side of the vehicle(going to the -ve terminal). With all that done, it was on to replacing the two thermal switches in the radiator and the thermostat. This meant a complete drain of the coolant. Yuck. I did my best not to make a huge mess, mostly because I didn't want any chance of any animal(especially my cats) getting into the toxic fluid. It all went okay and I pretty much had every hose disconnected to try and get all the old fluid out. At that point the thermostat was replaced, just because I had a NOS one in-hand. Refill was uneventful. The last jobs were to diagnose why my diff lock light was flickering(loose wire) and put the front skid plate back on. So, did it fire up and drive after all that time off the road?? Hell yeah!! It took a while to cough to life, but it did and eventually ran better. I could barely sleep last night because I was excited to get behind the wheel today, lol!! I went up my mountain bike trails with a couple of friends and everything seems to be functioning as it should. We were relieved we didn't have to walk home. The only time this truck "let me down" was actually on the parkway right at Northfield Rd. I think it likes the dirt. Unfortunately, I was having so much fun I didn't take any pics. I will soon though...

Excellent! I should really get back in the garage to start working on projects again. For me "should" is a dangerous word. Of course we all know that you have a much better excuse for not being in the shop than I do(i.e. cool work), LOL!

We were looking at coach/carriage houses in the area. Trying to plan our Methuen property shop future before the stupid Ladysmith bylaws get even more restictive ...

You need to scoot up the alley West From 4th. The one South from French. You should be safe, corner lots are easier to get approved.
Interesting. Any solid plans? Stan

Stan No solid plans, just a lot of questions as to which way we are going to go. We like the idea of a coach house, but affording it is only going to be after one or both of my folks go and we can sell the duplex and move up there. God only knows how many years away that is, so we are in the most preliminary of preliminary stages. I hate holding patterns....
