It has been a hectic time for me the last while with moving my parents into their new place and moving my place of work to Chemainus and trying to reestablish flow of work. Time for fun has therefore been been at a premium. However all work and no play makes for a rather dull existence, so prioritizing a couple of days in a month for exploration seemed in order. It helps when you have a friend who has a yen to go out also, and Dave is keen to put his 'Zuki thru its paces(at times more that I am willing with the Iltis, but I have no trouble setting my limits
).
Mostly it has been up Copper Canyon Road, the haul road leading from Chemainus up into the interior of the Island. Apparently there are ways thru to Nanaimo Lakes, but locked gates don't allow it to be an easily accomplished task in a vehicle(quad and motorbike might make a go of it though). Here are some pics from our forays up there:
Forestry Pools part way up. Gotta go there in the summer and swim!
Chemainus River as it crosses under one bridge. Note the cool rock formation. I call this the crocodile teeth crossing.
A few weeks ago we tried getting up to Holy Oak Lake. Oh man, what a ton of snow! It got real cold too, so being in shorts necessitated having the heat on full, lol!
Everyone loved the view over the clearcut, but not Lucy, she kept scanning for squirrels...
Crofton mill
Filled up today in Chemainus and it looks like the Premium guarantees no ethanol
Logging beside the road...a lot of it
Some protected replanting striving to become a forest again. Unfortunately looks like a monoculture. Germany here we come...
Made it to Reinhart Lake. Lots of dust!!
I guess for if people ever go up in colder conditions...
Apparently they stock the lake with Rainbow Trout. These guys "caught their limit". Don't know what that is in numbers. Not big, but I bet very tasty...
The advantages of an aluminum boat...Repeated tree strikes while in the back of a truck can't sink'em
This road was very steep, the pic just doesn't capture it!
What was that about responsible harvesting with smaller cut blocks to allow species diversity to be maintained??? Right.
Abandoned machinery
Yes, those are bundles of second growth trees...
That's it until next time....
