Thanks guys. I got a lot of the wood I am still using from when they took down the Somas (sp?) Mill in Port Alberni. It was just when Demexx was just starting up and I was dealing with the two owners. They even saved some of the better stuff they came across for me at my request. This boat would not be as far along had it not been for those cheap wood days. I bought the deck wood out of a garage in Duncan and had just enough. The planking was band milled from those Mill floor beams and did it take a lot of steaming to get it to move(twist) into the stern. The new frames Ted and I got in tree form when the land owners cleared some huge Garry Oaks from property on John Rd in North Saanich. We actually winched them into his GMC van using a tow truck type arrangement he had made for the roof. Wish I had pics, but there was not time for taking them…and not enough manpower to spare The stern was completely rotten and the whole thing is new down to and including the horn timber. Anyhow back to the bulwarks Once the joints were close, the faces had to be trued up…. refit….. ...and saw kerfed to mate the ends. That's better. They probably won't all be this nice, but to get close is my goal. Then came fitting to the deck. Just a wee bit too much gappage for Sikaflex Spile it with my extra special made up block Turn the whole thing upside down(a real luxury) Plane it down to the line Flat to the fore/aft lines I can live with the result

Welding that on there is going to be tough! Mad Skills...or just MAD!!!
At any rate, you are doing a ripper job. Nice to have a little wood work in your life. NICE! B

Mad Skills...or just MAD!!! Pretty sure it is the latter.. Work has progressed slowly. It's the SAD that has gotten in the way… Anyhow I do sometimes pull myself 'round…. The last of the curvy bits... On to the longer pieces I have found them to be tougher to fit to the deck as they are 8' long(thus more of the sheer shape comes into play) and have to sit without rocking(too much). On to the last piece. I had been dreading it because there was NO room for error. Both the forward and rear joints were bevelled in such a way that once cut, cutting further would result in a piece too short and usable for the space(i.e. I couldn't just drop it down more and have it fit). So I fit it to the deck first cut the forward end, refit to the deck, then made as accurate cut on the aft joint as possible. It worked, but took a while. I hate cut and fit operations, but here it wasn't possible to make as accurate a pattern as elsewhere. Luckily I cut it big at first because this piece was first going to be used for the other side until I realized the sweep of the piece was pretty close to the sheer. If I had used on the side I first thought, it might have not had enough thickness due to the thinning of the piece near one end and how my joints were laid out. After too much fiddling it all came together. The joint is better than the picture makes it look. Too many shadows! So only one more piece to go

It's really taking shape Don , that's one heck of a solo project! Do you have a thread about Mr. Burnaby on any boat forums?

It's really taking shape Don , that's one heck of a solo project! Do you have a thread about Mr. Burnaby on any boat forums? Thanks Tony. Yes, solo projects of this size are probably not recommended by most counsellors I have not ever thought of posting on any boat forums. I did look into some Westcoast Workboat forums and they are quite the dead zone. The only from I looked at that had any life was the WoodenBoat forum, but I don't want to show too much enthusiasm Those upper crust eastern boat builders probably wouldn't approve anyway I have been slowly working away. It has been quite the task with bevels, shapes and curves and fitting them all together taking up a lot of brain space. Luckily Russ has been working on his Ghia and letting me help a bit so I can still feel the VW blood in my veins… So where was I ? Oh yeah, going broke trying to get the bulwarks fitted. The last piece was fitted on the FWD starboard side. Thankfully saw kerfing the joints had to be done on the boat once again as the pieces clamped together were too heavy to maintain a controlled decent down the ladder. Then came the question as to how to get the outside shape. Turns out a short pencil was the answer. From there all pieces could be bevelled according to the patterns I had made earlier with cardboard. For those with flare(or standing bevel from the bottom reference face) I couldn't make them square but had to pare them down to the line at that bevel. For the pieces with tumblehome I squared the piece off first them hedged my bets with a partly squared off face. I had to first had to thickness plane them down to 4" or so. A thickness planer mimics the reference(bottom) face so it is pretty handy for things like this and deck beams. For the aft most piece(with tumblehome) it went like this after thickness planing: Until I was to the lines my bevel gauge generally dictated The pieces started to fit together And got crudely faired together Now I have to get to work on the inside face. More bevels and head scratching as to what looks the best. After all it is all about the aesthetics

Shavings......... I remember when I was a kid in Tottenham , the corner store carried everything , popsicles that would make your tongue bleed , a wooden pickle barrel and sawdust everywhere on the floor emanating from the back room where they did butchering, The shavings were deep in there , those were the days oh yeah cork liners in the pop bottles too......

Your twin brother turned up. I was coerced into attending. I am having trouble maintaining my spirits thru the uncertainty of what to do with, or what is going to become of, my tooooo big project. It is demoralizing having any money I have made on VW work/sales disappear into a black watery hole, never to return. Turns out I might have a way out of the mess, but still nothing absolutely definitive…….. I can miss next time if it would make anyone feel better
