So... an update after such a long time. I will try to post pictures I took my engine bits to Ellice Automotive in Victoria and left it there for months. There were many things to be done and recently they called and I went to pick up the engine. A lot of work line bored the case and installed turned crank shaft. new cam shaft as the old one was toast. all new bearings and seals new cylinder- many notes on samba say use a matched set of cylinders but they found one to add to the existing 3 and made a set. the heads were cracked so found old pair to install my valves were in good shape to installed the whole lot with new tubes. New sparkplugs painted the whole thing up to make it look pretty installed fly wheel and provided new clutch plate and pressure plate
so I brought it home and installed all of the extra bits all that I had. painted all of the engine tin.
i have some photos so I will try to upload now

So .. This photo shows no generator installed. I was surprized to see that the pulley Cast iron on the generator- was NOT in alignment with the main pulley. I learned this just before last meeting at Timmy's and learned quickly there is a 30 amp and 38 amp generator. I went home to find this it is incorrect 38 amp! So i need one if anybody has one to spare I have other small issues. the block came back without studs to mount the generator mount. I read several places that bolts could be used instead of studs. This is argued by one as an advantage so that you could pull mount directly readwards to remove instead of lifting it up and over the studs. That is not the issue however. installing the last bolt, it stripped under not to much torque luckily it was the one most accessible So I will install a longer bolt and put a nut on the exposed long end! the other thing I learned it that the Thermostat is toast. It is too long- expanded- to fill the entire space if the mounting bracket so I will add to my next order at CIP1 one last photo of what I have so far

The 38 Amp is the correct bus generator. But it won't work unless you have the proper backing plate, fan hub, and pulley to allow this longer generator to fit correctly. Otherwise you will have to use the shorter Beetle 30 Amp unit... Good that you project is moving again...

I had this issue happen to me once. I told the story at the meeting...but in a nutshell, my inexperience led to me actually installing it without really noticing anything was amiss until tightening up the belt revealed something fishy was going on. I couldn't get the tension right and it tightened up in a strange manner. Well, being in a hurry to get my daily driver back on the road and out of the borrowed barn/shop, I fired it up and coasted out of the barn and down a grassy slope. BIG MISTAKE! My god, the hell-fire screeching and the plumes of blue smoke were enough to curdle anyone's toes! What a mess! I think I had to get the tractor to push me back up into the barn and redo the whole thing. Very embarrassing Doug, I might have a stock thermostat for you and I think Russ mentioned he has piles of generators...and the experience to know which backing plates go with them
