I bought this van in Courtenay last year and towed it home. Parked in my back alley and started on the brakes.

So the brakes were relatively simple. I replaced slave cylinders . The ebrake cables were a problem! when I ordered from CIP1 they came wrong size and when I ordered replacement cables they were also wrong. The overall length was correct but the was wrong so I cut it down to length and it seems to be fine. When I tried to Bleed the system, the rear brakes would not bleed. I spoke to Russ and he advised to replace the flex tubes which I will do when they arrive.

I took the engine out today! Before I did, I drained the oil and got..... 3 litres of water and a small amount of oil! I can only imagine that the whole thing is ruined.

Great to see this Westy getting some lovin' Doug! Even better that you are finding the time and making the effort to post pics of your progress. Not trying to be critical, but that emergency brake cable looks a little slack in that last pic. Did you have it hooked up at the front yet at this stage? This is the way the rear brakes looked on my 70 SC after redoing them:

Removing engines in the snow... What fun! Nice that the gas heater is still hiding there.

Thanks Don, I am not sure about the length of the cable exposed in the rear drum. It is connected and seems to work fine. I will be careful to test it in operation and can add length to the sleeve if required!

I stripped the engine apart today! It is pretty basic. I do this on the floor of my garage. s36.photobucket.com/user/dougcreba/Engine%20strip/storythe rats seemed to have made a home ! <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dougcreba/embed/Engine%20strip/story"></iframe>

this cylinder is certainly a problem. There is considerable rust on cylinder wall that will need further investigation. I had to drive this through with a block of wood. All pistons on all cylinders look fine! the bottom end of connecting rod on this cylinder looks a bit rusty and will split the case tomorrow to have a look! not sure about how photo bucket is dealing with these photos?

Looks like you have some work cut out for you. Wonder how all that water got into your engine??? The Photobucket pictures are working fine for me...

I can't quite figure out what is inside the engine. It seems to be water and oil mix after many year! The worst is the gear end of cam shaft before cleaning is like this and then I cleaned it up and find significant corrosion! and the gear is toast and I need a replacement!

The crank shaft looks reasonably clean! the centre main mearing both sides is corroded. and The crank shaft looks untouched by water!! no idea how it got inside. I conclude vandalism. Noone would purposefully pour so much water into and engine. but more investigation will help

Some of your pics don't seem to be working, Doug. Are you copying and pasting the IMG(last down the list on the right when viewing the solitary pic from your library)? I kinda like that sweet kitty cat, but it might be more informative to see VW stuff Cheers, Don
