Actually washed the Acura earlier this week, and vacuumed it out so it at least looked much better...

So look what is back in my driveway again...
Yes it features the black hood the kid requested. Somehow the Honda symbol was removed at the same time as well. Note the Acura rims are installed with the new Michelins courtesy of Jason at Cedar Tire. Once Victor gets a JOB, it is up to him to lower the car, and eventually find some custom alloys with those rubber band tires. "Sensible Dad" prevailed for now with the 60 series all seasons...
There is still a lot to do yet. The thumping speakers and amps have yet to be installed, as well as the alarm system. At least that stuff is on hand and was free. I still will be forking out for the brakes, timing belt, tune, oil service, etc., etc. With regards to the need for a job, I asked what the insurance would cost for one year for the kid. How does $2553 sound !!! That will be a wake up call for him. Part of the reason that Civic Si's are expensive to insure is due to the fact they seem to get crashed a lot. And despite being 22 years old, it is still number two on ICBC's top stolen vehicle list... Hence the alarm system... Can't wait to complete this project and move on to the VW's again...

And that's for a novice driver with a $500 car. Harsh reality there, too. She's been paying $220 a month to insure it, insurance expires tonight and no moola in the bank to renew or continue payments. The introduction to reality is nasty.

I started driving in 1985 with a 15 year old car worth $300. I really don't remember insurance being that expensive back then relative to vehicle worth. The Civic is currently worth less then the insurance value... Something wrong there...

It looks really good. Isn't that tailpipe a bit on the skinny side though?

Man! That car looks great! Nice pull on the black hood. Stoked for the boy. As much as the harsh reality of insurance sucks, ripping around in yer first car is awesome!
Enjoy! B

Sooo, the Civic project is continuing. Today we FINALLY finished the last of the paint rectifications. We ended up sanding down pretty much the entire car with 1500 grit sandpaper, and polished everything with rubbing compound by HAND! This was highly tedious, and not particularly fun, but the results were well worth it. The black side trim and cowl trim were repainted with specific trim paint to give a fresh look. The outside is completely finished now. Next up will be doing the mechanical work, including timing-belt, full tune, oil service, and new brakes front and back. Last will be that massive amp and speakers...
The $100 Acura project has stalled out completely. It seems the guy I bought it from turned out not to be the registered owner! It was actually in his wife's name, and she does not appear interested in signing over the papers, given her husband sold it without telling her. Me thinks they are having some "issues" with their relationship, so this may not end well for me. At least the investment was cheap, and I did get the wheels I wanted, so we will see how this all works out...

As much as i love me a civic, it will be good to see that thing gone so you can be a VW guy again. Your boy is lucky to have you guys. My dad bought me my first bug and helped me fix it up, I'll never forget it.
Too bad about getting stuck between a feuding couple. I say call Judge Judy. If you play your cards right, you will get yelled at on TV. B

Sooo, this is still slowly ongoing... With the exterior paint done, it was on to some mechanical work... I started with the back brakes which needed new wheel cylinders due to seized bleeder valves. This should have been a strait forward operation, but as usual I got carried away...
That over-sprayed mess just won't do, will it???
MMM, much better. Of course I could not help myself, and removed the entire brakes, and then the wheel bearing hub in order to remove and bead blast the backing plates. The drums were blasted too, and I was able to save the original wheel cylinders which were in otherwise excellent condition. Then on to the front end...
New pads and rotors were required. Incidentally these Canadian built Civic Si's use bigger brakes then the US spec. This is because they only had the smaller hatchback model Si's in the US, where as we had the classier coupes available in an Si package. Anyway you will note the calipers are now red, which was Victor's special request. He still would like the wheels to be painted black, but I am not sure of that yet... The timing belt is currently off the car and normally this would be a very simple job to replace. Except the engine compartment is now getting a full detail job... Imagine that...
Still working on getting the Acura registration. The guy I bought it from swears it WILL happen. Sure. But given I definitely don't want the kid driving the Civic in the winter anymore, I hope the Acura thing works out. This is a pattern of mine. Fix up the old winter beater too nice, and then you need to get a newer winter beater. Then that gets fixed up too nice too. Do you see a pattern here??? I don't really want to even drive the Tercel anymore in the winter either...
Afterall it is been part of the family for 20 years now...

Both of those cars don't look like winter-beaters to me. I agree with you. Good call on red brakes. Much faster. You are doing a sweet job on that civic. Looks like million bucks!
Well done. B

Better get a steering wheel club for that beauty! X2! How's the engine detailing going? Can't have it looking shabby if the rest of the car looks like this!
