Might have a rare "authorized side job" in between... I also sat in the Fastback yesterday and felt guilty for ignoring it. Of course it started up instantly to tell me to hurry up and get back at it...

Authorized side job? Hmmmmmm I know what you are hoping for, but no. Keep in mind your Bus wouldn't physically fit in Volktales' garage, lifted or otherwise. Sorry . Anyway, what's a few more bucks from the sale of Kermit(version 1.0) spent at Bavarian to get Kermit(version 2.0) up(and I do mean up), mean, green and terrorizing the scene? Gonna be cool! I'll give you a hint regarding the "side job" being contemplated(from what I have heard)....summer is usually a season for Bugs.

And here it is. Done! Finally... Out of the garage for the last time and pressed back into daily driving duties...
This picture was intended to show the audio installation, but somebody crawled in for a nap after their big walk around Westwood lake...
Even Mom seems to approve...
But this is the big news! The kid has his "L", and it has been put to good use already. The first night featured a lot of stalling, but he seemed to figure it out on the second day. Today he drove all over including highway traffic without issue. Yes I was proud... We also discovered a couple of things. Like when going to get gas, we forgot that the filler cap and gas door cavity was full of masking tape! Another thing we discovered was that young guys in old modified Civics honk and wave at other modified Civics. Just like old VWs. Who woulda thunkit???
Meanwhile the $100 Acura has made it to the house and is now wearing its winter rims and tires from my sister's old Jetta. I finally received the paperwork for this car after waiting over three months for the owner's to get their shit together. The only expense so far is a new battery, but there will be more soon... Fun and games...

I've been known to wave at a tasteful civic build. Anyone who has had one of those cars knows that they are awesome little rippers. Looks pretty awesome. ENJOY! B

So I haven't said much on the sight lately... Computer is not fixed yet, but still have a couple of pictures saved on IMGUR, and here they are: Yes I have been working on the $100 Acura again. Finally got it in the shop and had Victor yank the cylinder head off. Sure enough, the gasket was blown into #1 cylinder. While I was in there I decided to check the valve guides and lap the valves. Sure enough there was some wear in the exhaust guides and pits in the valve seats. I was going to use the old Neway hand cutter we have at work, but it was not designed for valves and stems so small. Hand lapping just wasn't working so I rigged up an electric drill with a hose attached to it. Basically this was using power tools to do the job instead of those sucker stick things that keep falling off. It did work eventually. Ideally the engine should have received new exhaust guides and a valve job, but that ain't happening on this vehicle...

Sooo, fiddling with brakes this weekend. New pads and rotors for the front, new pads for the back. Basic stuff, what could go wrong??? Seized up rear caliper, that is what. These are more complex then front calipers, due to the park brake mechanism being part of the caliper. The dust boot was torn allowing moisture to get in and rust the piston up nicely. As a result, the chrome plating on the piston is damaged, and the surface where the seal rides against is rather buggered up. Something tells me the caliper will cost more than the whole car did...

Yup. The caliper cost more than the car did. Well ten bucks more anyway... So I have been very busy lately trying to get this project done as quickly as possible. Fiddly jobs such as repairing the broken wiring for the power window, creatively fixing the gas door cable and hood cable handle, and fixing a bad ground so the air bag system now functions again. Today was the big day for the first actual test drive. So was it great??? Uh, no. Whenever you buy a non-running car, you take your chances on how good the rest of it might be. In this situation, I knew the car was a daily driver for the previous owner until the head gasket blew and he parked it. So you would assume that the car was roadworthy in other functions, right? Well lets just say it has a noisy wheel bearing. Not a slight hum, or background noise. We are talking sooo loud that it was deafening, and so vibratory that your hands feel numb holding the steering wheel! It however ran great right up until the dreaded check engine light decided to come on. I was expecting this, but kinda hoped it wouldn't. I had a previous intermittent fault with the camshaft position sensor, and this will need to be replaced which is not a five minute job... The only other issue was the tired engine is noisy when hot. I will try thicker oil first, as the 5W20 this engine calls for is too thin once 402,000 km have passed. If the thicker oil doesn't help, then it looks like drive it till it blows, and then throw in a used engine. Are we having fun yet???

At least you know it has gone over 299,999K! Toyota Canada says the reason why my odometer froze up at that mileage is because it was a "designed limitation". In other words they actually admitted to designing a car that would become obsolete at a specific mileage.
It'll most likely be the last Toyota I'll buy, unless I see some pigs flying by my window anyway. Stan

We are not having fun. Drove the Acura extensively this weekend, and other the extreme wheel bearing noise, it performed just fine. Today I put thicker oil in it (20W50)! as this is what I had lying around. I convinced myself the engine noise was somewhat less. Then I bought a new cam sensor and installed that, confident Acura nirvana was near... Then without warning, the automatic transmission lost all drive... I knew these models were known for transmission issues, but mine featured a new looking torque converter so I figured I was safe. Nope. Damn. The end of the line for this project as it is no longer economically viable. Can't tell you how happy I am about that...
