indeed terry,great fun! i would also measure from center out to each tube end,insulator and trailing arm grub screw on all 4 tubes. maybe switch the upper leaves with the lower to see what,if anything changes. its easy to blame the wrong component (spindle) if some other item is wacko. Thanks for the feedback and ideas Mitchy. I'll check those numbers and make sure it all makes sense. Question for you though if you dont mind. Wouldn't any manufacturing problems (inward of the trailing arms) be reflected in the offset measurement? I'll still check the numbers and look for the suspect wacko parts, but my setup is coming in right in the middle of the offset chart, so that's why I'm blaming the spindles and carriers. We are not getting much done in this department are we mitchy965 looks like the beam was cut at the ends not sure if that is an old beam cut or a new fabrication but the re-drilled spring leafs you would set exactly where the trailing arms sit regardless how long or short the tubes are but measuring them would let you know if it is off square or not and that is a good idea to switch the leafs from top to bottom you could do that by pulling one side apart and unbolting the grub screws I think you could pull the spindle and drum intact and just have to remove the brake line wheel and speedo cable depending on what side you work from plus the shock you don't have to pull all the leafs just the top ones are we are making this easy enough for you Wongai. Fun with Wongai T I think I take it all apart like you guys suggest. At best I find and fix the problem, at worse, I'll learn more about what I'm doing here. This thing was assembled when I bought it so it would be a good learning experience to rip it all apart. You guys rule! Thanks again! Byron

I know, I know...I gotta get this bug done! Well over the holidays I gave it a lot of attention. I'm now at the reassembly stage. I had to add some seat belts as there are none on a 61. I have tested the engine and it sounds like a million bucks. I got the camber issue sorted by buying some crazy expensive parts from Airkewld in the states. Nice parts, but they ate some budget. All in all, very happy with how this thing is coming together. I know many of you dudes don't like the ratty bugs too much, but perhaps "Klumpen" (german for Nugget)will eventually grow on you. :-) More photos to follow as I finish getting all the lights back on. Carriers and spindles. Non CIP version. Worked perfect. Wish I had just spent the money to begin with. I recommend Airkewld but be warned of the price after shipping...

I like ratty Bugs quite a lot actually, although my personal preference is always towards shiny. I still don't understand the fautina craze though,where someone deliberately destroys the paintwork of an otherwise decent vehicle to make it look ratty. That just doesn't make any sense to me!
Looking forward to seeing this bug back on the roads.

I had to do a little bit of "weathering" on the newly welded areas on the bug. Getting it to blend well was very difficult. This car has been painted about 6 times by 6 different people and 6 colors. Hard to make it look consistent.
Can't wait till driving season!

Looking forward to seeing it back on the road again. I totally get weathering in the repairs to help them blend with the original bodywork - that makes sense, because new paint against the old looks plain wrong. Retain the natural wear, but get rid of the rust and make it safe. A past member sanded his nice bus down to achieve a patina look and I just didn't get it. Maybe I'm getting old.... I do love an original car that has aged with time. If I owned one like that I'd probably end up with the urge to go shiny after a while, but these cars are cool to look at and enjoy driving, without worrying about scratching the paint.

Well - I was on the home stretch with this bug. 3 things left. Installing the fuel tank, setting up steering, and bleeding the brakes. When bleeding, I started to build pressure and found that almost every wheel cylinder leaked. I tore them all down and rebuilt them. After starting the bleeding process again, they all started leaking again (but not as badly). They were on the car when I got it. I imagine they are of low quality or perhaps they sat "dry" for too long. Can anyone recommend a wheel cylinder that I can have some confidence in. I don't want to do this job again.

Just installed some ATE branded wheel cylinders on a '61 at the shop today. They came from Chris at Victoria VW. Don't know on their long term performance yet...

I'm usually a bus guy. How do I know if they are skinny or not? What's the normal width? I can tell you are about to save me from making a mistake. I'm all ears! Thanks Stude!

measure shoe width and drum surface. compare with catalog listings (cip1). over the years many parts get swapped out for newer or cheaper assemblies so who knows until measured. wheel cly and backing plates and drums must match.
