Ok sorry to mislead you I tried to put one together the 40mm shoe didn't fit on the backing plate the anchor is to tight to to backing plate the 30mm shoes won't fit the 22mm wheel cylinder sits too far out and the shoes do not sit on the backing plate of coarse mitchy965 is right as always I feel so defeated I lost sleep thinking about it and had a dream the forum had a mutaie some member were going rogue. I will put the front wheel cylinders in the mail and some pins and springs adjuster screws and bits hopefully you can use some them. Now if you were to use later irs or wide axle swing backing plate now let me think. Ya Terry

Thanks all for the encouragement and the awesome diagram from Mitchy. You guys rock! BTW - interestingly, I called Chris at Vic VW and even he cant source backing plates. Seems like I might have to make a trip up to Rick's and see what he's got in the back yard.
Thanks again all. I WILL OVERCOME! B

Well brakes are all put together with the right parts, thanks to Stude and Hogg's for all the bits and pieces. Just need to bleed em but im confident they will be ok.
Now I'm on to my steering box. Free play at the wheel is way too much. I have tried following several protocols for fixing this, but nothing seems to work, or even help. Is there the common mistake that a bonehead like me makes? A typical oversight?
Thanks dudes! B

Thx for the reply, I followed Rob and Dave's method www.vw-resource.com/steering_box_adjustment.htmlI backed of the sector screw, made the a tool for the worm shaft out of a nut and flat wrench, took a tiny amount of play out of the worm shaft, locked it, then snugged the sector screw and locked it. It didn't get worse and it didn't get better. The entire chain group of parts are new so i it's not a wearing out issue. I tried a couple of similar methods from youtube, but one of them involved turning the wheel while snugging the sector screw. Not sure if that's a good idea. This is likely loser error on my part, but it could be a case of CPTSD (crappy parts traumatic stress disorder). Thanks for your input! B

you did it right Wongai, most don't and just adjust the sector to tight and wear everything out. hard to say(without it in hand) what going on. is this a reman box? trw?. i have had the most success with a factory box (even worn out ones seem better than the new shit

I thought if I removed the steering box i could get some good photos and take it apart. Perhaps i could just do it all in place. There is no fuel tank so it's pretty accessible. Once I finish work I'll get at it. Thanks all! B
