Is the play definitely in the steering box? Any play in the tie rod ends, spindles etc will show cumulatively at the wheel.

We had a '61 in the shop recently with tons-O-play at the steering wheel. It turned out to be a combination of loose tie rod adjuster sleeves and the clamp that connects to steering shaft to the coupler assembly. Get someone to turn the wheel slightly back and forth while you look carefully at each component to see where the play is.

Thanks fellas! The play is definitely in the box. All the other parts are new and I have checked them all. I actually took the whole thing off and put it on the bench. Was was able to reduce the play on the bench by backing off the sector screw a very particular amount. If I nail it, it works like it should. But then when I turn the shaft through it's entire rotation it the play comes back again. Clearly it is worn out or tweaked in some way. I think I'll just throw the universal solution at it. MONEY! I'm ordering a new one today. Learned a lot during this process though.
When I was a kid with my first 59 bug, i remember the car being trouble free. But now that I look back, I probably didn't notice or recognize issues like steering play. My car didn't have wipers, bumpers or seat belts so I guess I had bigger issues.
I'll let you know how it goes! thanks again all, B

I recall seeing someone selling rebuilt ones on the samba a while back. Could this be an alternative to buying new junk?

My buddy has a new TRW that we have made a deal on. The TRWs seems to have mixed reviews. I hope I'm not making a mistake on this. I'll look a for the rebuilt ones on the samba, perhaps I'll put the TRW in a back up parts bin.
Thanks again all, I'll let you know how I do. B

A few posts ago Don asked for more pics (I never post pics for some reason). I could show a pic of a steering box with too much free play, but I'm not sure it will convey the frustration. So instead, a pic of my new driveway! The driveway was a project that I have put off for years, but with my bug about to hit the road with the ride height of a basset hound, I needed to deal with the significant drop off at the front of my garage. All good now! Before we exposed the aggregate, I put a VW emblem in the soft concrete then took it out after rinsing. There is enough room for 9 buses, but my wife made me move one of my 74s to my lower wood shop as she felt it looked trashy. I hope my bus didn't hear her talking that way! Quick update on the bug...Steering box should be here today. Installed ASAP. I'm having trouble getting my brakes to pressurize. I'm certain I have some air trapped...work in progress. After that I believe all I have to do is install the fuel tank. The goal is to have this thing on the road and de-bugged in time for Volksfest. Would be fun to have it there. I promise I'll park on the grass this year instead of hiding in the parking lot (my usual MO). Thanks for checking it out! B Attachments:

I think that everyone is thinking the same as me and that is WOW your going to love it you have a very nice setup there good for you your not going to want to leave the yard. I have a thought about hard to pressurize brake lines I also have had problems I am thinking to brake lines at the master if they are not bent down to a lower point at the master instead of up to a high spot in the system they trap a bubble of air in the high spot that is hard to bleed out I hope that makes sense. Funny you should suggest that info about the high point in the line by the master. I was looking at that last night and thinking that exact thing. I need to get me a bender and reconfigure those things.
Good idea! Thanks again!

Hey there folks! I drove the 61 bug last night for the first time. Pretty dang awesome! I was so excited that I failed to take a picture before I put it back on the lift. My buddy took a shot with his phone. poor quality but you get the idea. I'll post more shots once I have it back on the ground. STOKED!

I imagine this car will already have a hard time fitting in around here. The eyelids just push the issue. :-) B
