I bet that's what is wrong with this set up. Mismatched parts must have been installed before I got this car. The mounting springs and retention clip are loaded up so tight you can barely get them off.
Looks like I need to do some research. Perhaps all this stuff is wrongo!
Thanks again guys! I appreciate your help as I try to get this bug on the road.

Looks to me the drums are the same 58 to 67 so the wide brakes will fit and the wheel cylinders are the same 58 to 64 and fronts 58 to 67 think that the fronts would fit in your rears and so would the shoes. If you have wide fronts and skinny backs running 135's they tend to lock up in the front with any slick road that's why the larger wheel cylinder in the back also. Terry

Thinking the replacement drums may be wider to get the wider shoe in a oe 64 down drum must be a squeeze but doable you won't know till you try Wongai I have the parts for the rear that I am not using and am going to Victoria tomorrow and could meet you for drop off and you could mock up or use what I have and return the rest. Another thing the screw in the star adjuster should be the one with and angle not flat. Terry

Oh Man!
I failed to see this post until now. I was away from my computer all weekend. Sounds like I missed a good opportunity to meet you and get some assistance. Very much too bad! I'll check out the links you sent and get a parts list together. Thanks again for being so open to helping out!! Again, so sorry I missed you.

Well it does indeed seem like I have wide fronts and skinny backs. I have to start cross referencing the rest of the parts. What a pain. I thought I was almost done! :-)
And the screw adjusters on the front are flat, and slanted in the rear. Is that the way it is supposed to be?
While doing the parts audit on what I have here, I notices that my backing plates have no parts number. The only thing stamped on it is a tiny VW and W2. Any idea how I can figure out if the backing plates are right for the rest of the parts?
Thanks! B

Here are the results of my parts audit. If you click on the tiny image it will show properly. Being that I don't have backing plate part numbers, it's difficult to sort out what the heck is going on here. Frustrated!! Going to work on my bus. At least I know that the bus has all the right parts. I hate guessing at this stuff. I'm tempted to just toss it all and start again with known parts. Also i should ad that the pins (that hold the springs) on the front are 30 mm and 35 on the back.

All this mis-matched stuff would have me retreating to my Bus too That said, it does look like you are making headway. A steep learning curve yes, but it'll be worth it in the end and you'll have the satisfaction that you made it all tickety-boo. Keep at 'er!

front cyls are 58-77. rears are 58-64 and then 65-67. its much easier to remove the backing plate and mock/assemble on the bench.use the parts you have and start with the cyl and then the adjuster then fit the shoe with out any springs to see if it mounts properly(flat) with a good register on the plate and the adjuster screw (you will know right away if the screw is incorrect). there's not too many options and if you add a piece at a time the wrong component(s) should be evident. as twig would say "it aint rocket surgery"

I talked with Wongai today and the plan is I send him a box of parts and we try and squeeze a set of 269 in the rear of his car along with a set of front cylinders from 58-77 and see if some clearance issues have to be done on the outer edge of shoe lets see. Terry

I admit that I was thinking the 65-67 rear were 40mm but if your running 135's up front you need more stopping power from the rear even if the only shoes you can run are 30mm if you upgrade to a larger 22mm rear wheel cylinder from a 19mm that is a start I have the parts to try I am hoping that a 40mm shoe with a little clearance will fit plus I am sending full a full assortment of springs and keepers and adjusters. It may take the 315 shoe to do the job we will see if your willing play Wongai. Terry
