Hey folks, Many of you have seen my rather ridiculously rusty 74. I bought it a few years ago for a couple grand. Russ, no doubt remembers me leaving him standing in Ganges on Salt Spring in a hilarious cloud of smoke as I sprinted to the ferry on my remaining 2.5 cylinders. I installed an awesome Vanagon engine, but now it's time to deal with this rust. This will be my biggest rust project yet. There is so much rust on this bus, I would be wise to find another, but I'm cheap (aka not wise). So to kick it off, here is a shot in full camping glory!

A quick wash before it heads into the shop for what will certainly be a long stay.

An example of what I'll be dealing with. Sorry for the photo size. I tried photobucket but I had all kinds of issues. Click to enlarge...

Not cheap, but thrifty or money wise. At least that is what I tell myself!

That's awesome man!
I love that old thread. I remember looking at it when I bought the bus from Scott. He is an awesome guy for sure.
After doing the Beetle and the Vanagon I have some confidence, but if you see me doing something dumb in this thread, please let me know.
STOKED! B

Thanks for the advice, I'm up there fairly often so I'll see what he has kicking around back there.
I got some panels form a dude up island. Got about 6 patches for 100$. If I find better metal at ricks, no big loss on the panels.
Thanks for the positive vibes! I'm gonna need lots!

OK...here is a little status report. The amount of paint and body filler that was removed can only be described as comical.
Now I'm just cutting away anything that doesn't look like a VW.
A careful observer will notice some of the "improvements" that people have added over the years. The center heater channel looks more like toilet plumbing than stock VW. Also hard to see is the 2L sprite bottle that caps off the system to stop the fumes from getting piped in. I'm willing to sell these upgrades and my second hand floor if anyone is interested. This is an epic project so I'll keep posting updates as this bus continues on it's weight loss program. PEACE! B
