Time to "steer" this back on track.... I had a similar problem with my Ghia caused by poor quality ball joints. I had bought new Meyle ones from CIP and they essentially crimped themselves onto the ball when pressed in. It would not self centre and felt like it was tramlining along truck ruts in the road even when there weren't any. It was awful. miacvw.proboards.com/thread/685/1971-ghia-convertibleCheck the comments on thesamba link. I replaced them with a set of quality ones from Chris (bobloblaw) at Victoria Volkswagen. Now it steers beautifully.🙂

Tight ball joints is unfortunately a real problem too.

Maybe they were just tight then? I assumed the housings had tightened onto the balls when pressed in. Perhaps they were just tight from the factory?
Either way it was horrible to drive.

The problem joints tighten up to unusable once pressed into the torsion arm. Unfortunately you cannot reliably tell before you press them in...

I checked roller shaft adjusting screw today and it was screwed down tight so after backing it off a half a turn I can now steer comfortably. BUT after driving home from downtown I sprung an oil leak which fell on the heat exchanger and pumped smoke into the cabin aaarrrgggg...another challenge to overcome lol

Oh I totally agree Rob, once the teething problems are all worked out it will be kickass!!!

Had a 72 that gradually got tighter and tighter turning left until it would mostly only turn right. That was OK because to make a left turn in a city you just have to make 3 right turns. On the highway I could coax it to turn left because it is usually only a fraction of a steering wheel turn, (larger radius...) Eventually had to replace the steering box. (no machinery or living thing was harmed during this period in my driving career ;-) Stan

Success!!!!!! I now have lots of power, I switched from an aftermarket 009 to a stock vacuum advance from my spare engine and then hahahahaha get this... I then switched wires 180 degrees on the cap and holy smolly what a huge difference in power!!! Plus no more smoking not sure if its related tho. So now its fine tuning the timing and carbs again hahahahaha Oh and I put a set of Riviera's on her...Pics coming

Looky at this! Rob has installed some new rims, and don't they look great!?!?! And you can see by this pic that he has been out cruising around in it too. Good times! Riviera rims really suite this car well and set it off. How is it running now???

Its running way better now, I hooked up both vacuum outlets but cant seem to get the timing quite right. Its just not as good as it could be but I will solve that hopefully hahahahaha

Here is a little update on the fasty. I have been struggling to get full power from the engine, farting around with the timing, balancing the carbs, lean best idle and I couldnt seem to get it right until today when I was talking with Russ and describing the symptoms, well he said why not try removing the air cleaners maybe its not getting enough air and holy smolly what a difference!!! The inch and a half high cleaners were just not letting it breath enough so now it goes like stink and I am a happy guy now. Now I have to design an air cleaner that wont choke the engine down. At first I tried covid masks but Im sure they wouldnt last very long LOL. I found the slim air intakes from a 1700 bus engine so now figure out a center mount air box that will fit on top of the motor but wont be to tall so that it hits the engine cover. I will sleep on it and ponder in the morning.

Here is Rob's first solution... The real solution is to adapt these parts somehow... I am sure he will come up with something...

Here is Rob's first solution... The real solution is to adapt these parts somehow... I am sure he will come up with something... If it needs more air the real solution is a turbocharger. Then it will be a fast fasty. Just playing you know us hot rod guys.. Keep at it.
